Today in Economic History: It was on this day back in 1916 that income taxes became a permanent fixture in the United States as the Supreme Court declared the 16th Amendment constitutional after several rulings against the taxes.
Wuss’up This Week: Every day reports about our economy are released into the wild – and it’s these reports that can sway interest rates in either direction. Today we’ve got Existing Home Sales, tomorrow Jobless Claims, and on Friday the Q4 GPD – this is an important report because it’s a measure of US economic production. A weakness in the number may lead to lower rates. And where are rates, you ask?
Kiss the 3’s goodbye… for now. A 30yr fixed rate bumped up last week to the low-4s with ARM rates slightly lower. As usual rates will vary based on your credit score, type of home, equity in the home, and if your home is near an underwater post office.
Don’t Forget to Remember: Any purchase or refinance loan over $240k I will waive HALF the lender fees – an $895 savings! Grab yourself a cup of instant karma and pass this info along to any friends, family, coworkers, or 2017 treasure finders who can use this gift.

Timeout for Trivia: Congrats to those who last week guessed Kid Rock. Want to be entered into a drawing to win a Play-Doh My Little Pony Friendship Festival Harmony Set? (*Is this the worst prize I’ve ever offered? No, it is not. Is it the best prize I’ve ever offered? Yes. Yes it is, Mortgage Fans.). Simply email me the answer to this week’s Who Am I? question. Good luck: “It’s my birthday today and I’ve been around a long time. I’m a singer-songwriter and have had plenty of number one hits. I’ve had two songs I wrote and recorded that other bands made even bigger (Smash Mouth and UB40). So I can sing and write good enough to have been inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame, but what can’t I do/won’t do? I can’t act – I was the first-ever winner of the Razzie award for Worst Actor, I won’t run for office – although If I ever become President I’ll try to take one my favorite tunes and use it for the National Anthem (*note: it was the theme song for the Michael Dukakis 1988 presidential campaign), and I’m not good at being married. I’m on my third marriage – the first two ended up on the rocks.”
Happy 53rd Birthday shout out to my brother Billy tomorrow. For the last 20+ years he’s led our fantasy football team to a lot of last place finishes, but he’s still the greatest guy in the world.
