Focus Quote of the Day: “You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” – Mark Twain
Hi, I’m Troy McClure – and here is one of the finest supercuts of all time.
Let’s get the ugly out of the way: Interest rates climbed to the highest they have been in a long time over the past 4 weeks. Why have they gone up?
Because the Fed, led by Chairman Ben Bernanke, announced about a month ago they would be ending their purchases of mortgage-backed securities somewhere in the near future as the economy is getting better. They started buying these a few years ago to help keep rates artificially low in order to help our struggling economy, but like artificial sweeteners it was only delaying the fact that our weight and rates would go up. (I know…not even sure if this analogy makes sense – writing this at 3 in the morning…) So the Splenda campaign is coming to its bitter end but it ain’t the end of the world, Mortgage Fans. Rates are still historically low. Go buy or refinance your home before they climb more.
30-yr fixed rates remain in the mid-to-upper 4s with ARM rates about a point lower. Don’t forget to tell your friends, family, coworkers, and neutered pets that for any loan over $240k I will waive all lender fees – a $1,295 savings!
Commander Crunch or Cap’n Crunch? Despite the lie I will not drift from my crunchberry addiction.

Timeout for Trivia: Congrats to those who guessed Lionel Richie last week. Want to be entered into a drawing to win a Ronco 5-Tray Beef Jerky Machine? Simply email me the answer to this week’s “Who Am I?” question. Good luck: “In two days I turn 38. In the late 80s/early 90s I found myself auditioning for the same parts as Leonardo DiCaprio – we struck up a friendship and vowed to not audition for the same parts – so it’s kind of funny we are both in Gatsby together. In 2002 I won the MTV Award for Best Kiss – maybe it was because the costume I was wearing. Who knows? Here’s what I do know: in 1995 I quit my part in Empire Records because of my alcohol problem, but ever since then it’s been Pleasantville for me.”
