Throwing Rates, Quarters, and Llamas!
Throwing Quote of the Day: “I’m just like my country. I’m young, scrappy and hungry, and I’m not throwing away my shot.” – Lin-Manuel Miranda
This Week in Economic History: It was on December 13th, 1978 that the US Mint made a quarter with suffragist Susan B. Anthony’s picture on it. (*side note: in 6th grade our teacher asked us our goals in life, I told him mine was to have my picture on a coin or dollar bill. I have since lowered my goal to now just make it onto a Chuck E. Cheese game token.) Here’s ten cool facts about Susan B Anthony.
Wuss’up This Week: Every day reports about our economy are released into the wild, and it’s these reports that can sway interest rates in either direction. Today we’ve got the FOMC announcement at 2:00 followed by Jerome Powell press conference, tomorrow Weekly Jobless Claims, and on Friday Retail Sales (which should beat expectations according to my credit card balance). If these reports come out good for the economy you can expect rates to tick up, and vice-versa if the numbers disappoint. And where are rates at, you ask?
You’ll find 30-year rates in the mid-to-upper 3s (and sometimes low-4s) with adjustable rate mortgages a teeny-tiny sliver lower. During the first 18 years of my mortgage career ARMs were good alternative to fixed rates if you weren’t going to own the property that long, but in the last year or two the yield has flattened and they aren’t going to save you much as an alternative to a fixed rate. Maybe one day they’ll come back just like this list of pop-culture comebacks
Don’t Forget to Remember: I’m running a Leap Year Special! Any purchase or refinance that closes with me between now and February 29th gets $550 credit towards closing costs. Grab a cup of instant karma and pass my info along to any friends, family, coworkers or co-slackers that can use this gift!
Throwing Quote of the Day 2: “The best person to get thrown in jail with would have to be the Kool-Aid Man.” – @iSubsisting
Timeout for Trivia: Congrats to those who last week guessed Marissa Tomei. Want to be entered into a drawing to win a Llama Popper? Simply email me the answer to this week’s Who Am I? question. Good luck: “It was on this date in 2006 and 2007 that both of my movies were # 1 at the box office. The 2006 movie has a title with a word purposely misspelled so I can’t be sad about that, and the title of my 2007 movie might make you think we filmed the life story of Chrissy Teigen’s husband. My favorite movies? Probably the three I made about battling aliens, but let’s not forget about TV. I loved my sitcom that ran from 1990-1996 which could’ve also been partially titled The New Son of a Monarch.”
Happy 3rd birthday shout-out to Slater!! When my wife and I got married we debated on whether to raise our kids Catholic or Jewish and in the end decided to raise them as both. I know your parents are struggling whether you should be an Eagles or Bears fan and unlike religion you can’t pick both. My advice is to stick with the Bears – they’ll bring you more heartache but also prepare you for the real world which can be pretty cruel at times.
