Washing Machines, Rolls Royces, and Rates!
Adult Quote of the Day: “Adulthood is like the vet, and we’re all the dogs that were excited for the car ride until we realized where we’re going.” – Author Unknown
This Week in Economic History: Lots of stuff happened in the last week of March. Yesterday in 1863 Sir Henry Royce was born – he went on to build his line of luxury automobiles. (BTW – any time you can get a ‘Sir’ in front of your name people automatically think you must be important which is why I’m adding it to my title. Let your friends and family know that Sir Barry Schwartz is the guy who can help with their mortgage needs). Also, on this day in 1797, Nathan Briggs was awarded his patent for his invention, the first washing machine (which eventually led to proof that teenagers are still dumb) And it was on March 30th, 1867 Secretary William Seward agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia for $7-million dollars. He took a lot of flak for purchasing what was called ‘The Barren Icebox’ but later got redemption when gold was discovered there in the late 1890s.
Wu’ssup This Week: Every day reports about our economy are released into the wild that can sway interest rates in either direction. Today we’ve got Pending Home Sales, tomorrow Jobless Claims and Cubs Opener (with apologies to the Bears, Bulls, and Hawks it’s good to have baseball back again), and nothing on Friday as it’s Good Friday – let’s make it a Great Friday and all take off work a little early. (*by ‘little’ I mean leave at lunch on Thursday and call in sick Friday).
I’m in Florida this week on a working vacation (my favorite oxymoron) so I’m going to be short on fun links for this blog today. In a nutshell, we’ve got 30-year fixed rates in the mid-4s with ARM (adjustable rate mortgages) rates about a half a point lower. As usual, rates will vary based on type of home, equity in the home, and credit score.
Don’t forget to remember: From now until the end of July I will be waiving all appraisal fees – a $400 savings! Grab yourself a cup of instant karma and pass this info along to any friends, family, coworkers, and co-slackers that can use this gift!

Timeout for Trivia: Congrats to those who last week guessed Rosie O’Donnell. Want to be entered into a drawing to win a Volkswagon Camper Van 3D Puzzle? Simply email me the answer to this week’s Who Am I? question. Good luck: “I was born Stefani Joanne Angelina on this day in 1986, although my stage name now is defined in the dictionary as ‘very enthusiastic and excited about something or someone.’ and was derived from a Queen song. In 2007 I was signed by Streamline Records to write songs for Britney Spears, New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. Once I started writing for myself I was having a ball. I had the number one selling song of 2008 which had absolutely nothing to do with playing cards, and by 2009 I was selling out stadiums – although recently a football game was probably the reason for being sold out.
